Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #214

August 4, 2016

Quilting Friends,

Whew, it’s been a fabulous summer thus far!  We were glad to go on vacation and glad to get home; sound familiar?  We spent 3.5 weeks in Wisconsin to teach, camping our way up and back, then 3 weeks in Hawai’i (Big Island, Kauai and Maui) and then 5 nights on the Gulf Coast (Redington Beach) with girlfriends.   Yes, I hit as many quilt shops as I could get away with, and came home with lots of great ideas for upcoming classes.  I am so, so glad to be home with my trusty sewing machine and ongoing projects.  And since it’s hot as blazes outside, that works out pretty well.

What have you been up to this summer?  If you didn’t escape Florida, I hope you’re A/C is up to par and you’re dug in.

If your guild is in the market for Quilt racks for your next quilt show, see the bottom of this newsletter.

Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine

PS: I love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime!

Butterfly Flying Over Red & White Peony by Keiko Morita, Japan

Cool Classic Rides 2 – Quilts by Teresa Shippy
They’re back, bigger and bolder than ever, Cool Classic Rides 2!  Teresa Shippy’s CCR2 was motivated by CCR1’s success, excitement and favorable comments from all. CCR2 comprises a number of classic alternative rides in addition to classic cars. This second collection has also been created from her cut-up quilts, leftover painted fabric pieces, vintage men’s ties, wool scraps and lots of threadwork. Teresa’s inspiration for Cool Classic Rides is her love for vintage. She remembers the cars we used to drive as kids. Some were hand-me- downs;  however, we never thought that was the case. We were always excited to get behind the wheel of the next slightly used ride. Take a walk down memory lane and enjoy the rides.”

How Do We Spell Florida? … Everglades Park
Presented by the Hibiscus Quilt Guild Our challenges are called How Do We Spell Florida? A participating member picks a phrase based on Florida themes. From there, each participating member picks a letter. Then, makes a quilt depicting something in reference to the phrase that starts with that letter; they must put the letter somewhere on the quilt. 2017’s phrase is Everglades Park.

Let It Grow – Mason Dixon Quilt Professionals Network
The MDQPN is excited to present their 2016 Challenge, Let It Grow! The exhibit includes 20 quilts depicting the growth of everything from world peace, family, love, chocolate, nature, fantasy to quilting skills and money! The quilt professionals who contributed to this exhibit include five quilt book authors with nine quilt books among them, two quilt shop/quilt business owners, 6 professional quilt teachers and three professional quilt judges.
MASKarade - Gold Coast Quilters Guild
The theme for the Gold Coast Quilters Guild 2016 Challenge is MASKS. Masks have been used for their expressive power since antiquity and come in many forms: Ritual masks for sacred and healing purposes, performance masks in theatre, on action heroes and heroines in the movies, in graphic novels, masks in fashion, pageants and carnivals such as the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the Venetian Carnival in Venice that have played out for centuries. Even in the animal world, Mother Nature has given many animals including birds, cats, dogs, owls and butterflies mask-like faces.  Masks are fascinating!

Trees - Quilters Innovative Design (QID)

“Let’s take our hearts for a walk in the woods and listen to the magic whispers of old trees.”                                                          ~ Author Unknown

Trees shelter us. Trees provide life and sustenance for us. Trees inspire us. The Quilters Innovative Design group selected Trees as our yearly challenge. The topic provides artists with an opportunity to create, experiment and perhaps have a bit of fun in the quilting medium. Bernie Mayer created the quilt pictured above.

Plus, more exhibits to be announced …!

QUILT RACKS FOR SALE

The Disconnected Piecers Quilt Guild of Port Charlotte, FL, has decided to sell the Quilt Racks that we have used when hosting our Biennial Quilt Show for the past several years since our venue can now provide and set up what we need at a reasonable cost.  The Racks are solid wood and very sturdy and will hold up to 4 pole ends.  If your guild is interested in purchasing them, the cost will be $700 or best offer (plus you will need to pick them up or pay for shipping).  They have been stored in a climate controlled storage location in North Port so they have not been subject to the Florida weather issues.
Included are wooden poles (which the quilts or drapes hang on) and Upright Stands with bases.  We have 44 6ft long poles, 84 8ft long poles, 13 9ft long poles, and 14 10ft long poles.  The poles are a standard diameter and could be easily augmented at Home Depot or Lowes.  We have 74 8ft high stands and 10 10ft high stands.  The 10ft stands have additional pole connections at 8ft.
We can provide pictures of the Quilt Racks, If you are interested, please contact Jackie Myhrberg (941-889-7227) or email dpqg@yahoo.com.
