Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #215
www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com
Sept 4, 2016

Quilting Friends,

Well, everyone really pulled together and created a MASSIVE number of quilts for the victims and families of victims of the Orlando Pulse shooting.  The Orlando Modern Quilt Guild reports the latest number is…. 1000 quilts!  Yes, you read that right.  They are now working hard to figure out the best way to distribute quilts to everyone.

And now, sadly, we have another reason to make charity quilts: the flood victims in southern Louisiana.  I have not heard of a quilt collection effort yet (if YOU have, please let me know), but I do know of a New Orleans quilt shop that is collecting new, homemade pillowcases.  The shop owner will fill every pillowcase with a brand new bed pillow before distribution.  Send your NEW homemade pillowcases to: Mes Amis Quilt Shop, 6505 Spanish Fort Blvd, New Orleans, LA. 70124. Thank you!

If you are not familiar with the “burrito” style of pillowcase construction, here’s a good tutorial to get you going:  http://www.seasonedhomemaker.com/pillowcase-tutorial-burrito-style/
If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.

Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine
PS: I love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime!

A request from a Tallahassee reader:

I recently brought back from Haiti--some color and pattern choices..by a quilter
in a small town near Port au Prince. She has an exceptional eye for colors and patterns, but I couldn't stay long and there is nowhere to work.. as well as I am not use to irons filled with hot coals and old treadle sewing machines!

SO, I gave her a lot of batting and some nice pieces of fabric.

I would like to put her choices together in a simple pattern--and put it up on the internet..to gauge the interest..

I could never do this alone..as I am starting a class on the 22nd and my hand was injured..so I cut very slowly. I also don't have a Serger..so probably would not do justice to her picks.

Do you think there is ANYONE out there--within driving distance of Tallahassee--(one hr)..who would work with me on this??

I have tried the Quilt organizations here and a church and have got no response.

Would you please help me put out the word..

This is strictly for charity to see if..with better equipment...and skills...her colors could be put together--to sell for a decent price.

This is my way of trying to "test the waters" to see if bring some equipment and doing this in Haiti would be worth/not worth the effort.

Rose-Marie would be delighted to know her picks were pieced together and actually sold! She would be very happy and I would split the proceeds with her and anyone who would help me.

I'd like to keep this very simple--with a simple/easy pattern.

Please let me know if its possible to find someone with a little time and interest in helping with this.

CHARITY PILLOWCASE SEW-IN IN MAITLAND

Give us a hand!  (Formerly ConKerr Cancer) Ryan's Case For Smiles Sew In will happen at The Sewing Studio on Tuesday, September 20th from 10am-4:30pm. We are calling on volunteers to help us sew pillowcases to comfort kids in the hospital with terminal diseases. Please bring your own fabric if you have extra; children's prints only, please. Our goal for September is to make a mile's long worth of pillowcases.

Bring basic sewing supplies: scissors, neutral threads, pins, seam ripper, and anything else you need to sew comfortably. You may use our sewing machine or you can bring yours.

If you cannot make the event but want to donate homemade pillowcases, The Sewing Studio is a drop-off location.  Just attach a note “Ryan’s Case For Smiles”.

Call The Sewing Studio to sign up to volunteer: 407-831-6488
