Quilting Friends,

[click to enlarge] Here’s a fun little Christmas in July Tablerunner: gotta love those gnomes!  I also love how the designer used the twister block as the background. I"ll have to remember that one. We’ll have kits for this project soon at The Sewing Studio.  Probably at our “Christmas in July” event on July 21.

Announcement #2:   If you live in Central Florida and would like to teach the next generation to sew, here is a GREAT opportunity:

We are organizing our 4-H year for September thru May.  We are in search of community leaders, hobbyists, and business folks to lead the projects.   4-H  project curriculum books are already established with easy to follow instructions/suggestions.

Would you know anyone interested in leading youth sewing  for either ages 8 thru 10 years or 11 -16 years?  It is once a month for 2 or 3 hours.

We meet at the Seminole County Extension Services auditorium at 250 W. County Hone Road, Sanford (a block off 17-92).

Sincerely,
Crystal Drummond

SALLY GLAZE, QUILTER, VISITS THE FLORIDA QUILT MUSEUM

June 20, 2018:  Trenton, Florida  The Florida Quilt Museum was thrilled to have Sally Glaze of Gainesville, Florida visit her work, The Governors Quilt, that hangs in the current exhibit, In Honor of Those Who Serve: A Patriotic Quilt Exhibit.  The Florida Quilt Museum, located in downtown, historic Trenton, Florida at 409 North Main Street, is open Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Admission is free, with donations gratefully accepted. A preview of the exhibit may be seen on the Museum website at www.floridaquiltmuseum.com.
The Governors Quilt was made in honor of the quincentennial of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America in 1492.  The circa 1992 project took two years to complete.  Her work features 51 blocks based on the 1909 Dover Quilt Book on State Stars.  The 1912 update to the original guide was used to add the blocks for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Each pattern was reproduced using recycled X-ray film, “I wanted to do 6-inch blocks,” said Mrs. Glaze, “The patterns in the books ranged from 13 inches to 10 ¾ inches…. reducing the 12” pattern was easy:  the 10 ¾ inch was a nightmare!”
Mrs. Glaze purchased every piece of red, white or blue fabric she could get her hands on while working on The Governors Quilt.  Mrs. Glaze sent a personal letter to each state governor at the time, telling of her project plans and asking for their participation.  In each letter, she enclosed a piece of fabric, with a signature box delineated by freezer tape, a special pen and tissue paper.  Every governor responded.  Mrs. Glaze has a book with all the correspondence she received back from this project.
“The backing of the quilt is a large eagle, to tie everything together, and the label is printed on fabric with words from the United States Constitution”, remarked Mrs. Glaze as she shared her experience with museum visitors.  “I am very pleased the way it all turned out and I am honored my quilt is hanging in the Florida Quilt Museum at this time.”
In Honor of Those Who Serve: A Patriotic Quilt Exhibit, was organized to honor Sgt. Noel Ramirez, 30, and Deputy Taylor Lindsey, 25, two of Gilchrist County's finest examples of community patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice, when their tours of duty ended abruptly on April 19, 2018. Two Gilchrist County Sherriff’s Deputy uniforms stand empty, flanked by photographs of Sgt. Noel Ramirez and Deputy Taylor Lindsey and surrounded by the Patriotic Quilts.
The Florida Quit Museum is home to The Florida Quilt Trail and Trenton’s Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival. The Florida Quilt Museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying Florida’s quilting heritage.
Mrs. Glaze is pictured below in front of her quilt, The Governors’ Quilt.
