Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #82

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

December 30, 2004

Quilting Friends,

This missive comes to you a few days early this month to accommodate an announcement from Charlotte County…Ruth McDowell, one of my favorite quilters, will be teaching a workshop (see below).  Sounds like there are a few seats left.

Along with my teaching in various venues, I have accepted a position with the Central Florida Fair.  I’ll be the Creative Arts Superintendent for the Fair in March.  So if you decide to enter your quilts to be judged and exhibited, I’ll get to meet you.

If you’ve never exhibited your work before beyond the walls and beds of your own home, I urge you to take a trusting leap to the next level.  A Fair is not as intimidating as a Quilt Show might feel, and its just a lot of fun to see your work hanging for all to admire.

Here is how to get to the entry form and category pages on the Fair website: Go to   http://tinyurl.com/5zyho   On the left side of the page, find the “View By” tab and click on PAGE.  Scroll down to Page 14, which is the beginning of the Creative Arts Exhibit section.

As always, if you think you’re missing out on a newsletter, check the website for the latest updates: www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com.

Send your email address updates to me at mji@ibarguen.org

REQUEST FOR QUILTS AND BLANKETS

Lifeline of Hope has been working on the “Quilting for Orphans” program for about 6 months now. I might have contacted you back when we first started this program. We wanted to thank you and all of the people that have been helping us provide blankets for these children. We have received a lot of help with blankets, and spreading the word through newsletters and websites.

We still need your help; this program will be an ongoing effort of Lifeline of Hope, as unfortunately the need grows with every day. Over 100,000 children are orphaned or abandoned each year in Russia alone, and many times that number world wide. You can help us make a difference in the lives of these children.

Please help Lifeline of Hope by joining in the, “Quilting for Orphans” program.

Quilts, afghans, fleece, knit, or commercially made blankets of all sizes are needed.

Kind hearted, generous ladies are making beautiful, warm quilts and blankets that we ship to orphaned children around the world. If every quilter could donate at least one blanket, hundreds of thousands of children would be able to sleep warm and comfortably. If you are a member of a guild or sewing group, would you please help out by posting this letter again, or adding this information to your organizations newsletter or website? Please contact me; I will look forward to talking with you.

Business owners, if you have any slow moving or overstock bedding products, you can help these children and make a charitable donation to a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.

For more information about Lifeline of Hope; please visit us online @ http://www.lifelineofhope.org

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Best Regards, Jeff.

EXHIBITION IN NEW SMYRNA BEACH

APRIL 2 - 30

Keeping Track of Time: Quilts and Collages by Jette Clover

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 2, 4-7 PM

Although Jette Clover uses the quilt form (three layers stitched together) in many of her works, her compositions in cloth do nothing more to address that stylistic tradition. Instead, they push the boundaries of what is considered cutting-edge craft to include fine art in fiber, as evidenced in her latest pieces on display in April.

Her largely tonal compositions often feature scraps of writing, subtle markings, and show amazing dexterity with materials. Clover explains the impetus to her own work best when she states, "I find a compelling beauty in the textured surfaces of peeling paint, corroded metal, ripped paper and mended cloth. And I am fascinated by the random marks often left behind on these surfaces showing the process and transformation caused by time and the elements."

Clover's work is represented in many international public and private collections, including the American Museum of Art and Design. A resident of Cocoa, Florida since 2001, Clover is the former curator of the Dutch Textile Museum in Tilburg, Netherlands, and is responsible for staging the first European art quilt exhibition there in 1997. The author of four books on fiber art, Clover is a founding member of ArtsEtc, a Florida fiber and design group that meets monthly at the Harris House Annex.
