Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #152

April 7, 2011

Quilting Friends,

Thanks to some of my wonderful readers/scouts, I’ve been updating the shops page on my website this morning.  Unfortunately our down economy has had its effect on some of our great Florida quilt shops.  I’ve highlighted the shops that are no longer in business, or that have gone from brick-n-mortar to website only.  Please check it out and spend a little money at your favorite quilt shop.  Let’s keep our hard-earned dollars in the local economy, doing good where we work, live and play.

If you live in the Central Florida area, you may have seen me teaching or lecturing at shops and guilds.  I have a series of quilts and quick projects that I call StashBusters.  I bring my trunk show to local quilters and show lots of ways to use up that stash you know and love in your sewing room.  Some of the quilts are shown in my gallery.   Every time I lecture at a shop or guild, it’s a new batch of quilts, so you can keep coming back and get new ideas.  Anyway, check out the calendar page for my upcoming lectures at The Sewing Studio in Maitland, The Sewing Garret in Daytona Beach, and A Quilter’s Dream in Leesburg.  You will be glad you did.

If you haven’t heard yet about the fabulous exhibit in NYC of the 650 red and white quilts, I encourage you to see the quilts on the website. They also have an Iphone and Android app so you can look at the quilts on your smartphone.  This personal collection is quite a treasure!

Finally, see below (here and here) for info on Quilts to Japan.  We all do what we can!

To get a complete, organized, hotlinked listing of all the upcoming shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit the calendar page.

Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine

QUILT SHOW IN HISTORIC COCOA VILLAGE

Good Afternoon,

My name is Catherine Sligh and I work with the Historic Cocoa Village Association. We are very happy to announce that we are having our First Annual Quilting and Fabric Arts Show on August 20th this year.

We would dearly love to get some variety at this show and would appreciate it if you could pass this on to your members.

This will be a judged show with several categories – There will also be a ‘People’s Choice’ Award with votes from the general public.

Historic Cocoa Village is based about 6 miles inland from Cocoa Beach at the junction of SR 520 and US 1. We have over 50 shops (including a quilting store and a knit/stitch store..!) from gift shops, antiques malls, galleries, boutiques, specialty stores and we have 11 award winning restaurants to suit all food styles. Situated along the beautiful Indian river our first Quilt show will be in the Civic Centre along by Riverfront Park. The Civic Centre is a large, airy, modern building with lots of room for quilts and fabric arts..!! This show would be a fantastic weekend trip for your members…!

We are expecting a large crowd for this event and hope you and your members can join us…!

Thank you for your time.

Warm Regards,

Catherine Sligh

Wandering Stitches Quilting Studio

is proud to host

Birgit Schueller

an international award winning quilter

Birgit SchuellerRiegelsberg, Germany

Birgit has been operating her successful longarm quilting business with an international customer base in Germany since 2005. Being located at the edge of the longarm quilting world, self-teaching has been her key strategy. Over the last four years, she has won several awards in major European and international shows (among others MQS, MQX, HMQS, MMQS, OEQC, FOQ).

Birgit's quilting style combines playful and elegant elements. She likes to take up a theme from the fabrics used in a top and to continue this theme in her quilting. Her goal is to enhance every top without overpowering the piecing.

Wherever possible, Birgit prefers freehand quilting which allows her to let her creative juices flow – and it shows!

Classes are going to be held on July 19 and 20, 2011.  Cost $125 per class.

Students are limited to 12 and will be held only with a deposit –

Call the Studio – 407-658-4044 - today to reserve your space

A waiting list will be taken.

reluctant to pay the heirloom rate? Join Birgit in this hands-on class and get to know her

Carol Holsopple (Art Quilters unlimited, Ft.Myers) and daughter Chris launched their new online business www.KidsQuiltToo.org in February.  They design and manufacture colorful and delightful art quilt kits for children to make. The idea is to provide an income for the laid-off mom (Chris) and equally to create a way to help quilters mentor the  youngsters in their lives by sharing their love of quilting.  Take a peek at their web site and see what they have.
